Small Businesses in the Wiregrass are served by a fully accredited Small Business Development Center at TROY University

The Small Business Development Center Network at Troy University, part of the statewide Alabama SBDC Network hosted by the University of Alabama, has been awarded full accreditation through 2026.

The SBDC accreditation review process, mandated by Congress, is based on the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Program to assure that SBDC programs operate efficiently and effectively. The SBDC is the only federally funded program to maintain accreditation and has been cited as a best practice by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO).

“We are proud of the good work the SBDC at Troy University has accomplished in our area, and accreditation for the state’s network will pay dividends for the development of our region,” said retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Walter D. Givhan, Senior Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Economic Development at TROY.

“This milestone is a reflection of the SBDC Network’s commitment to quality support for new and existing businesses,” he said.

In 2021, the SBDC at Troy University has helped business create 74 new jobs, helped launch 21 new businesses and more than 3,200 people participated in some 6,000 hours of education and training statewide. Over the last five years, the statewide Alabama SBDC has successfully helped entrepreneurs launch 1,115 new businesses, facilitated over $520 million in growth capital, and helped small businesses create or add over 4,500 new jobs.

“This final report is a great reflection of the skills and expertise of the network’s staff and the impact of their work in creating jobs in Alabama while helping small businesses start, grow and prosper,” said Alabama SBDC State Director Bill Cummins.

The Association of Small Business Development Centers, the national accrediting body for SBDCs, under contract from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), conducted the week-long review in 2021. The review team assessed several areas of the program, including leadership and organizational management, the strategic planning process, client and stakeholder focus, service delivery, and program performance. These standards ensure that the public investment in the program from the federal government, the state government, and the host institutions results in strong returns for Alabama’s economy.

The Alabama SBDC has 10 offices and over 40 outreach partners throughout the state.  The Alabama SBDC is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the US Small Business Administration.
Entrepreneurs that are ready to start or grow their business can connect with an SBDC business advisor at ASBDC.org.

The SBDC at TROY serves a 10-county area that includes Barbour, Butler, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, and Pike counties.
